Ready to roll for the 6th Annual American Red Cross – Tour du Rouge

Here is my cycling story:

My cycling journey started about a three years ago.

I was grossly over weight and unhealthy. My daughter had come to an age where she wanted to ride her bike to school and I wanted to ride with her on my old hand-me-down Schwinn that had been given to me by a friend.

I got to the point that I loved riding in the mornings and would go on longer and longer jaunts, stretching the 1 mile round trip to 3 miles. That grew to 5 and 7 mile spins around our neighborhood.

For Father’s day that year I got a Mongoose 29’er and found the bike trail system here in Plano. I quickly made the jump to 12 and 18 miles, once or twice a day. Over the course of the summer, I blew through 500 miles and about 40 pounds. I was bitten by the bug and had to have more!

I learned of the Tour du Rouge through Bicycling magazine and knew that I had to do the ride!

I sold my truck to buy my Fuji Roubaix road bike at Performance Bicycle in November 2011 and began to plan and train as hard as weather would permit.

My first Tour was a very rewarding experience for me! The second Tour was even more incredible!

The Tour has allowed me to raise money for the Red Cross as well as make some new long term friends that would have seemed unlikely just years past.

Now when my family travels, you will normally see my bike on the back of our vehicle and me looking up my fellow Tour riders to go out for a jaunt while visiting an area such as Austin or Baton Rouge.

I have also completed the past 2 Hotter ‘n Hell Hundreds and look forward to my third this August.
